Fly your kite high!

Today was the warmest day we have had in Grand Marais in MONTHS! Snow was melting, birds were singing (or seagulls were screeching) and some serious kite flying was taking place down on Artists Point!

Happy March 10th!

Thinking Spring

Here, in northern Minnesota, it's hard to think about Spring or Summer when there is still snow on the ground. Fashion wise, however, it's smart to think about Spring a few months ahead of time. This video is a great, easy to digest outline of the top 5 trends that will be big this Spring and Summer.

Seeing runway looks can be a little daunting because they look far out and wild, but it's all about taking a cue from the runway and translating it into something that is fitting for you. Even if it's a leather accessory, like a headband, or a really bright top with some neutral shorts, you can make the trends into a style that is completely your own.

Staying Chic in the Cold

Dressing well can be easy in the summer, with easy one piece flowing dresses, and simple shorts and tank top combos, but as the temps drop it can get a little harder to stay warm while looking cute.

However with just a few basic pieces, and re-working layers, you can look chic, while staying toasty warm.

So first you need to start with some long sleeve tees.

These are all fairly inexpensive and from H&M. A long sleeve tee is a great base to start with, and you can throw on a ribbed tank underneath if you think you will need it for warmth.

For the second layer do a sweater, vest, or button up. Yes, you can even keep your flannel ,as long at is the appropriate size for you, no stealing your man's XL here ladies, save that for around the house!

The first top is a wool button up from Eddie Bauer, and the second two are from H&M. But we aren't done yet. A really hot thing right now is vests, and this one from H&M would look amazing over either a long sleeve tee or the flannel above.

Here are some examples of layering in action to get your creative fashion thoughts going.

Remember: Your jacket is the thing you are seen wearing the most in winter, so make it a good one with some style. a wool hooded peacoat perhaps, or a puffy coat with some interesting details? Don't forget about scarves and mittens in neutral colors that will match everything. Also, you don't have to go out and spend a fortune buying new things to look in style. Scour thrift stores for gently used or vintage items. Today in fashion is a great time, because styles that were in 20 years ago are in again, which means thrift stores are a prime spot to find great sweaters for layering in the fall and winter. Also Threads is a great place to shop if you live in Grand Marais or on the north shore, because EVERYTHING is brand new and half off!!!
Step out of your comfort zone, try new things, and stay warm.
